Is A-Level English a soft option?
OK here’s my problem…I am considering medicine, but am unsure if I really want to do it. For my A-level choices, I have definitely decided on biology, chemistry and maths. Physics was my current fourth option; I don’t mind it, however, I really love English and would love to take A-level English literature and language. Would I be best to take physics or English literature and language? Do universities look down on you if you apply for medicine and don’t have physics? Please help, I really don’t know what to decide, and don’t really have any idea of what to do! People have given me mixed responses-some say take physics, you’ll need it, others have said take English because you enjoy it . Please, please help I’m mega confused!! I got 6 A*s, 4 As and 1 B at GCSE…is that good enough to do medicine at somewhere like Cambridge? Do they view English as a soft option?
If you can get a better grade in English, then do it. You have Chem, Biol and Maths, which you need for Medicine, so your fourth doesn’t matter as much. English Literature by itself is a strong choice, while combined or just Language are a little softer. That said, they don’t think English is soft, just not AS strong as maths or history for example. You don’t NEED physics, but an A in it would probably look more impressive for medicine than an A in English Lit & Lang. You say you love English, so if I were you that’s what I’d pick. Good luck!
Your GCSEs are fine, but lots of Medicine candidates will have all A*s, so you can’t afford to have any weak results at A-Level. They’re great results though, so I’m sure you’ll be fine for Medicine, even with English. Physics is not necessary. =)
